The Padres scored 8 unanswered runs en route to an 8-4 win over the Giants on Thursday afternoon, taking the series 3 games to 1 after losing the opener on Monday night. Dylan Cease pitched well, allowing just 2 runs through 5 innings of work. But he allowed back-to-back solo home runs in the 6th inning, marring an otherwise strong performance that included 7 strikeouts.
The story of the game however was the Padres' offense, which scored 8 unanswered runs between the 4th and 6th innings after Justin Verlander had tossed 3 perfect frames. Manny Machado drove in Fernando Tatis Jr. with a single to left, and Xander Bogaerts brought Luis Arraez home with a sac-fly, as the Padres tied the game at 2 in the 4th inning. The Padres would tack on 6 more runs in the 5th inning, including two runs on a wild play where Freddy Fermin laid down a bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd, and both Ramon Laureano and Jake Cronenworth came around to score on an errant throw to first by Casey Schmitt and then a misplay in right field by Luis Matos. The Padres had 11 hits in all, including going 6-12 with runners in scoring position. With the Dodgers beating the Rockies, the Padres still trail by 1 game in the NL West with LA coming to Petco Park for a 3-game series beginning on Friday.
