The Padres defeated the Giants 5-1, earning their fourth win in a row. The Padres struck in the first inning, when Manny Machado reached base with 2 outs on a bloop single that landed in between three Giants defenders. Xander Bogaerts followed that up by ripping a double off the left field wall. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs, Giants starter Robbie Ray balked, allowing Machado to score from third base.
The Giants tied the game in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI-infield single from Wilmer Flores off of Nestor Cortes. But the Padres answered right back, with Jose Iglesias hitting a 2-run homer in the top of the 2nd, his first home run as a member of the Padres. Jake Cronenworth added an RBI-single in the 4th inning to give San Diego a 4-1 lead. Nestor Cortes ran into some trouble in the 5th inning, and Mike Shildt opted to manage aggressively. He brought in David Morgan to face Willy Adames with two outs and runners at the corners up 3 runs. Shildt's faith in Morgan paid off, as he struck out Adames to escape the jam.
After retiring Adames, Morgan came back out to pitch the 6th inning, and ran into trouble, giving San Francisco a chance to get back in the game. After Wilmer Flores led off with a single, Matt Chapman drew a walk, Jung-Hoo Lee lined out, and Dom Smith singled to load the bases with just one out. Shildt brought in All-Star setup man Jason Adam, who induced two pop outs to escape the jam unscathed. Jackson Merrill added a solo home run to pad the lead, and it was clear sailing from there. The Padres win combined with the Dodgers loss to the Angels put the two NL West foes in a tie atop the NL West standings.
