Ryan Bergert made his return from the IL after being hit in the arm by a comebacker in his last start, and more than held his own in the Padres' 4-2 win over the Phillies on Friday night. The rookie righty struck out 7 while allowing 2 runs over 4.2 innings, exiting the game before facing Kyle Schwarber for a third time. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts continued to swing hot bats, with Tatis Jr. going 2-3 plus a walk and an RBI while Bogaerts collected 3 hits and scored a run. Manny Machado blasted his 17th home run of the season, a solo shot in the 8th inning, to give the Padres an insurance run. The Four Horsemen combined to pitch four scoreless innings, though Jason Adam did run into trouble in the 8th inning. Adam loaded the bases with 1 out while protecting a one-run lead, but got out of the jam after making a beautiful glove scoop toss to Elias Diaz to get a force out at home plate on a dribbler back to the mound before getting Max Kepler to pop out to end the inning. The Padres have two games remaining before the All-Star break, and will send Yu Darvish to the mound to face Zack Wheeler on Saturday.
