The Padres won in dramatic fashion on Saturday night, with Ramon Laureano continuing to make an impact after arriving at the trade deadline and delivering a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning. Michael King made his long-awaited return to the mound after his shoulder injury, and was justifiably rusty. After completing 2 innings and allowing one run, he came back out for the 3rd, but was lifted after allowing a leadoff double to Alex Bregman, finishing his night by throwing a total of 57 pitches.
The Padres trailed 3-2 in the 5th inning, and mounted a two-out rally by drawing four consecutive walks, including two with the bases loaded to take a 4-3 lead. The Padres bullpen protected that lead and handed it to Robert Suarez in the top of the 9th inning. Ceddanne Rafaela led off the inning with an infield single, and then stole second base. He came around to tie the game on Roman Anthony's ground-rule double. Suarez was able to get out of the jam without any further damage. The Padres failed to score in the bottom of the 9th, and the game went into extra innings. Jason Adam pitched a scoreless frame, setting the stage for the Padres' offense in the bottom of the 10th. Ryan O'Hearn was intentionally walked to begin the inning with Xander Bogaerts beginning the inning on 2nd base. Then, Ramon Laureano hit a chopper that bounced over Alex Bregman's head to bring in the game-winning run. Dylan Cease will try to bring home a series win on Sunday.
