According to a Post on X from Ari Alexander in Houston and later confirmed by the San Diego Union-Tribune, Padres starter Seth Lugo has decided to opt out of the second year of his contract using his player option, and will become an unrestricted free agent. The soon-to-be 34 year old exceeded expectations in 2023, throwing a career-high 146.1 innings, with a 3.57 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 140 strikeouts and 17 quality starts. Had Lugo opted into the final year of his deal, he would have earned $7.5 million, but will now have an opportunity to secure a multi-year deal on the open market.
