San Diego State lost the Hawaii Bowl 25-23 to Middle Tennessee State on Christmas Eve. The Aztecs jumped out to a 14-0 1st quarter lead, as Jalen Mayden tossed 2 touchdown passes. Mayden hit Mark Redman from 9 yards out, before throwing a short pass to Kenan Christon, who took the pass 73 yards to the house.
The Blue Raiders scored 13 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter, cutting SDSU's lead to just 1 point at the half. The two teams traded field goals in the 3rd quarter, as the Aztecs held a 1 point lead entering the 4th quarter.
Chase Cunningham's 16 yard touchdown pass to Jaylin Lane gave MTSU their first lead of the game, 22-17, with 13:25 left to play. Jack Browning connected on two field goals over the next 8 minutes, putting the Aztecs back on top by 1 point. But that wouldn't be enough, as Zeke Rankin's 4th field goal of the game gave the lead back to the Blue Raiders, 25-23 with just 2:05 remaining.
The Aztecs could win the game with another field goal, but Jalen Mayden was sacked for a 12 yard loss on 2nd & 12, putting SDSU in a really tough spot. After an incompletion on 3rd & 24, the Aztecs tried a hook and ladder play on 4th & 24, but weren't able to convert, and without any timeouts left, they weren't able to stop the clock as Middle Tennessee State ran out the clock.
San Diego State ended their season with a record of 7-6, 5-3 in conference.
