San Diego State kicked off its 2023 season with a 20-13 win over the Ohio Bobcats at Snapdragon Stadium. The first touchdown of the game wasn't scored until the final play of the first half, when Jalen Mayden hit tight end Mark Redman for a 13-yard score as time expired, giving the Aztecs a 10-6 lead at the half.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter that saw Ohio miss a 31-yard field goal, the Aztecs were able to go up by 7 early in the 4th quarter on a 21-yard field goal from Jack Browning. SDSU forced a punt on the next possession by Ohio, and then Mayden led an 11-play, 79-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 4-yard TD pass to Redman, the duo's second scoring connection of the game. The Bobcats would lead a drive down to the Aztecs' 6 yard line, where CJ Harris would throw an interception on 4th down that the Aztecs returned 100 yards, but the play was nullified by a roughing the passer penalty, giving the Bobcats a 1st and goal. Harris hit Miles Cross for a 3-yard score on the ensuing play, bringing Ohio to within 7 points. After a turnover on downs by San Diego State, Ohio had one final chance to tie the game or take the lead, but Harris threw a game-ending interception, as the Aztecs were able to hold on and win their season opener. SDSU will host Idaho State next Saturday at 7:30.
