SDFC loses heartbreaker in penalty kicks

San Diego FC faced the Portland Timbers in the second match of their opening round playoff series, with Portland facing elimination with a loss after dropping the first match. After Portland scored first in the 18th minute, Amahl Pellegrino hit an equalizer in stoppage time right before the first half. Chucky Lozano scored in the 51st minute, giving SDFC a 2-1 lead and an opportunity to advance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The referees announced 8 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the second half, and with about 15 seconds remaining in the match and SDFC clinging to a 2-1 lead, Gage Guerra knocked home a header to tie the match, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and the match into penalty kicks. Both teams made their first PK. Portland missed their second, SDFC hit their second, and then Portland missed the third kick, putting SDFC up 2-1 with a chance to basically put the match away. Onni Valakari missed his shot, and Portland made their next two while SDFC missed their next two, and their final three penalty kicks, as Portland was able to extend their season with a thrilling come from behind win. Game 3 will be on Sunday 11/9 at Snapdragon Stadium.
