San Diego FC faced the Portland Timbers in the second match of their opening round playoff series, with Portland facing elimination with a loss after dropping the first match. After Portland scored first in the 18th minute, Amahl Pellegrino hit an equalizer in stoppage time right before the first half. Chucky Lozano scored in the 51st minute, giving SDFC a 2-1 lead and an opportunity to advance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
The referees announced 8 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the second half, and with about 15 seconds remaining in the match and SDFC clinging to a 2-1 lead, Gage Guerra knocked home a header to tie the match, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and the match into penalty kicks.
