IKEA has officially recalled more than 159,000 mugs, plates, and bowls due to a possible burn risk.
On May 19, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall notice. The report confirmed that the plates, bowls, and mugs could break, causing hot food or liquid to leak out, possibly leading to a burn hazard, according to Today.
About 148,000 “Heroisk” and “Talrika” mugs, bowls, and plates were sold in the United States in several shades, including pink, yellow, and blue. In Canada, 11,400 of the recalled products were sold.
IKEA shoppers should check if their products say “Heroisk” or “Talrika.” You’ll also be able to see that “PLA,” “Made in Taiwan,” and supplier number “23348,” are molded into the bottom of the items.
The products have caused 123 reports of breakage across the world. This includes four reports of injuries, two of which required medical attention. Most of the injuries happened because of hot contents leaking out of the products.
A spokesperson confirmed that only one incident was reported in the United States and did not involve an injury.
“Safety is a top priority for IKEA and therefore we are taking precautionary measures and recalling HEROISK and TALRIKA bowls, plates, and mugs,” an Ikea U.S. spokesperson said. “IKEA of Sweden has received reports of the products breaking after several months of use by customers.”
“HEROISK and TALRIKA are made of PLA (Polylactic acid or polylactide),” read the statement. “This is a more sustainable material since it is made from renewable sources. After reports of breakage, we can see that the material is not suitable for everyday meals with hot food. The products can break after some time of use and potentially cause minor burns, which is why we have taken this precautionary measure and recalled the products.”
Shoppers who have the items that were recalled, which were sold in stores and online from August 2019 through May 2021, are urged to stop using them and return them to an IKEA store.
You will not need to provide a receipt for a refund. If you have any more additional questions, you can call 888-966-4532.
