America's first gourmet restaurant for dogs has just opened in San Francisco.
We're just as confused as you are for why this sort of establishment was necessary, but you can also never underestimate the lengths people will go to make sure their dogs are living their absolute best lives.
The restaurant is called Dogue (pronounced like "dog") and ONLY serves dog food, which was hand-crafted by a classically-trained French chef.
Dogue founder Rahmi Massarweh says he got inspired to start the restaurant after he and his wife got Old English Mastiff named Grizzly. He told Forbes, "We knew we wanted him to be the happiest dog, with the healthiest food, and the best life we could give him."
Grizzly, however, proved to be a picky eater, so Massarweh used his knowledge as a chef and started making seasonal, fresh, whole foods, then took it a step further and learned from professionals how to handcraft nutrient-dense, balanced meals including pasture-raised, grass-fed meat and seasonal and organic vegetables. In 2015 Massarweh started selling hand-crafted, small-batch, artisanal food to clients, and a few years later the idea to open a full, gourmet restaurant catered to dogs was born.
During the week Dogue will operate as a "PAWtisserie" that sells small-but-elaborate pastry treats for dogs that start at $5 each, along with "Dogguccinos."
On Sundays, the restaurant will offer a variety of homemade dog foods, including a tasting menu with items like green-lipped mussels with wheatgrass, and raw filet mignon with fermented cabbage and a quail egg on top.
And the price of that tasting menu? A cool $75.
