It's sad that schools must prepare their staff and students for active situations, but unfortunately it's just a facet of life.
One teacher in Oakland County, Michigan has caused some controversy with how she suggests her students protect themselves in such an event.
Carly Zacharias, a Berkley School District Spanish teacher, posted a TikTok revealing that she gives each of her some 30 students a hockey puck because "really hurt you, especially 30," referring them being thrown at an active shooter all at once.
This isn't the first time hockey pucks have been suggested to combat active shooters, either.
A few years back, Oakland University began handing out pucks to its students because according to Tom Discenna, president of the American Association of University Professors, tossing small items, like billiard balls or hockey pucks, at possible assailant is "well received" in the law enforcement community.
According to the NY Post, active shooter drills are now a standard facet of public education for more than 95% of US schools, though some criticize the measure as unnecessarily traumatizing to children.
