Joel and Kiara Brokenbrough first met back in 2016 in Vegas but kept in touch through social media. The pair reconnected in 2018, and began dating shortly after that.
Eventually, the couple got engaged at the beginning of the year, and were married less than a month later on February 12, 2022!
What's made the Brokenbrough's wedding go viral though, is the fact that for their dream wedding, they spent just $500!
They first thought about a courthouse wedding, but they settled on eloping at Angeles Crest Highway in Los Angeles. They didn't need a public permit as their guest count totaled less than 75 people.
Kiara told FOX 11, "Our village is strong. People paid to fly out here to come to a wedding, and they knew if they wanted food and drinks, it's available for purchase, and they knew that. I didn't hear anyone complain."
The couple's biggest expense was an arch for the background that cost around $200. Their loved ones chipped in for items like flowers and a cake. Their reception was held at Misty's Lounge in Ontario. They didn't have a reservation, but the group went to the lounge as soon as it opened, and guests paid for their own food and drinks.
Kiara also only spent $47 on her wedding dress from Shein, and Joel spent about $100 total on his suit from Boohoo online.
What Joel and Kiara hope people take away from their nuptials is that their weddings should be about them, not the wedding itself. They hope they've encouraged other people to save on their weddings and save for their futures.
Kiara says, "Don't let a budget stop you from marrying that person. If you feel like you need to get married, let our wedding be a sign to you that it doesn't take all that and it can definitely happen."
