Low-level amounts of marijuana may no longer be a crime in Denton after the Denton City Council proposed an ordinance decriminalizing marijuana which will be voted on in November.
The ordinance would eliminate all tickets and arrests for possession of misdemeanor amounts of marijuana and paraphernalia, would prevent Denton police from stopping and frisking people when they smell weed, and prevent city funds from being used to test THC levels of substances thought to contain cannabis.
The Denton-Record Chronicle reports that if Denton voters approve the plan come November, the city said it would only be a few months until low-level cannabis prohibition ends.
If the ordinance were the pass, it would not apply to the Texas Women's University and the University of North Texas, who operate under their own jurisdictions.
It would also not apply when police are investigating felony narcotics crimes or violent felony crimes.
