Early Tuesday morning, two 18-wheelers on Interstate 30 near Zion Road in Garland collided with each other and burst into flames.
A man named Jesse Wilkerson was driving into East Texas to go hunting when he witnessed the crash around 4:30 in the morning.
Wilkerson told WFAA, "I didn't see what caused it, but I saw the accident happen, and I realized I was the only person there at the moment. I jumped out, and I realized the driver had his head and hands out of the window. The whole cab of the truck was just smashed."
Wilkerson immediately sprung into action and was able to pull the driver free before he was told there was another person asleep in the back of the truck.
He was able to pull him out of the window, but found his leg to be broken. "I just used what I could, the strength that I had and reached underneath him and picked him up over my shoulders and carried him to the other lane and put him next to his buddy," Wilkerson said.
"By this time, I could see his leg was severely broken."
All this took about two minutes. Police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.
"I just knew these guys were in trouble, and if nobody's there...they needed help," Wilkerson said. "At a time like that, you've got to decide if someone's life is worth taking a risk for and I believe it is so."
Unfortunately, one of the men pulled from the wreckage passed away from his injuries.
Further information on the crash and the victims was not immediately released.
