A grandfather and grandson going out fishing can be amazing bonding experience between the two. Well after watching a YouTube video, Duane Smith wanted to try out a new form of fishing with his grandson where magnets are used to reel in your catch.
And what Smith and his grandson reeled in resulted in the police being called.
Smith and his grandson Allen Cadwalader used a magnet capable of lifting up to 2,600 pounds at the C-102, one of the many freshwater canals that line the roadways and tree farms in South Miami-Dade.
And the pair ended up pulling up about "two pounds of scrap metal and 40 pounds of gun," according to The Miami Herald. Smith and his grandson pulled up two, identical 50-caliber Barrett sniper rifles!
And top of that, both rifles had their serial numbers filed off, so you can only imagine what kind of nefarious means the weapons were used for! Smith, a former Army infantry officer said, "Whoever did this is not your run-of-the-mill criminal."
Smith called the Miami-Dade County Police Department, which sent out two officers to pick up the guns, who sent a couple of officers to retrieve the weapons.
Police Detective Christopher Thomas said it will likely take the department a while to determine if the weapons were used in a crime. "Judging by the photo, those have been there for a while. That said, it will take some time for the weapons to end up at our forensics lab. Once there, they will be processed," he said.
However, Smith is not convinced the guns were in the water for very long, as they were wrapped in plastic and he was able to scrape away most of the corrosion after about 30 minutes.
"It looked like it was something that someone would want to come back for," he said.
