John F. Kennedy Jr. is remembered as one of our country's greatest presidents, but there is one achievement that we talk about far too less: JFK may have reportedly eaten the world's largest tamale.
Apparently, it was a birthday gift for President Kennedy back in 1961, sent by Roberto L. Gomez, Esq., president of the San Antonio Social Civic Organization, on behalf of "Citizens of the United States of Latin Heritage."
The tamale was made of "pork, pimentos, garlic and other spices," and though it was originally listed at 17 pounds, it was later described as a "gustatory whopper monster" weighing 48 pounds!
We don't know for sure if Kennedy had a chance to enjoy it though because it went missing on its way way to the White House!
According to Texas Monthly, three days after the tamale was shipped off from San Antonio, it disappeared. White House reporters even pressed the administration for answers on the whereabouts of the tamale.
We'll probably never know what really happened to the tamale, but Gomez did receive correspondence from the late president on June 9, 1961, a little over a week from his birthday on May 29, thanking the group for "remembering my anniversary in such an interesting manner."
In a 1972 Express-News column Gomez, insisted the late president "no doubt ate 'at least half of it.'"
