Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench recently sold a ton of memorabilia to help pay to send his two sons to college.
Bench auctioned off his last homerun bat, his last Reds jersey, a 1968 rookie of the year award, and his Gold Glove Awards.
However, Bench's friend Alan Horwitz didn't want to see Bench part with all that, so he secretly bought everything at the auction, only to give it right back to Bench!
Horwitz told Action Network, "There was no way I was going to let Johnny sell these to collectors. Seeing how hard he worked to be recognized the way he was after all these years. Only he deserves them."
Bench was, understandably, brought to tears when the auction house told him what happened. He said, "I am truly stunned by Alan's generous gesture and am grateful and proud that these trophies and memorabilia pieces will be on display for millions of fans to experience. Alan's only request was to meet my boys, which will happen as soon as we can resume safe travel."
Bench was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
