Usually we think we need to hit the gym to better our health. Apparently, it's quite the opposite.
Researchers from the University of California-San Diego have found that larger muscles don't necessarily correlate to better health, most notably larger ab muscles.
Apparently, science backs up the popular notion that it's all about the Dad-bod.
Britta Larsen, PhD, explained per Study Finds that men with a larger abdominal muscle area have a greater risk of heart disease.
The group's research found that the "large-muscle group's heart disease risk was nearly six times higher than the group of men with the smallest abdominal muscle area."
The researchers were not expecting to find such a strong correlation between increased muscle area and coronary heart disease.
"Muscle has been overlooked in health for a long time," explains Larsen. "Researchers have really just focused on fat. But muscle is a large, active metabolic tissue, and it's finally getting a little bit more attention."
