With Governor Abbott's announcement that all businesses in Teas will be open "100%" come next week and the repeal of the statewide mask mandate, a lot of questions have been raised about the state of schools, and whether or not masks will be required.
Despite the announcement from the Texas governor, the decision to mandate masks in schools will come from the school boards, according to the Texas Education Agency.
Several local districts, including Michael Hinojosa, Superintendent of Dallas ISD, will still be requiring masks. He told Dallas News, "As long as I'm given my preference, we're going to stay status quo with the masks for as long as we can."
Several North Texas school districts are following suit, including Garland, Fort Worth, Richardson, though some in Texas are dropping their mask mandates as well, including Rogers ISD near Temple.
School officials tweeted that they would no longer require students or staff to wear masks at school or events, and were also discontinuing temperature checks.
As a result of Governor Abbott's announcement today, Rogers ISD will no longer require students or staff members to wear a mask at school or school events. Individuals may choose to wear them at their own discretion. Additionally, we will no longer perform temperature checks.
