Yesterday, the first trailer for the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark dropped, and it looks fantastic.

And already, Michael Gandolfini is receiving acclaim for his portrayal of Tony Soprano, the role his father originated on the HBO series over 20 years ago.

Though he had never seen the series before, Michael watched The Sopranos to prepare for the role, and, obviously, found it incredibly difficult to watch his father, who passed away in 2013.

Michael said in an interview with Vanity Fair, "It was really hard to watch my dad. I recorded four hours of his monologues with Melfi and walked around New York with them constantly, constantly, constantly playing in my ear."

Upon being offered the role, Michael sat down to watch all six seasons in six weeks. It transcends everything," he says, "Republican, Democrat; patriarchy and matriarchy.”

The Many Saints of Newark is scheduled to be released into theaters, and onto HBO Max, October 1.
