Most of us will pack on a few pounds when we enter our 30s and 40s. It happens to everybody, and because common thought would dictate that at that point in our lives, our metabolism slows.

A new study from the journal Science says that our metabolism doesn't actually slow down until we hit around 60-years-old!

The study found that our metabolism peaks when we're babies around the age of one and gradually slow down as we reach the age of 20. However, from 20 to about 60, our metabolism levels plateau and actually remain pretty consistent.

If you happen to gain weight as you get into middle age, the study says other factors are at play besides a slowing metabolism, including eating more and being less active.
