Opal Lee is one of our favorite humans, one of the most important humans from North Texas.
The "Godmother of Juneteenth," Lee worked tirelessly to get Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday and as a result, Lee will soon be nominated for one of the highest honors one can receive: the Nobel Peace Prize.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday last year, thanks in HUGE part to the tireless work of Lee, who at the spry age of 89, decided to walk the 1,400 miles from her home in Texas to Washington, D.C., to draw attention to her cause.
