Jana Elementary School in Florissant, Missouri used to be a site where nuclear weapons were built during World War II.
Apparently, the building is still affected to this day.
Recent readings have shown a high amount of radioactive waste in the elementary school, according to a report from the Boston Chemical Data Corporation.
The school sits in the flood plain of Coldwater Creek, which was contaminated by nuclear waste from weapons production during World War II. The waste was dumped at sites near the St. Louis Lambert International Airport, next to the creek that flows to the Missouri River.
The Corps has been cleaning up the creek for more than two decades.
Ashley Bernaugh, president of the Jana parent-teacher association who has a son at the school, said per ABC News, "I was heartbroken. It sounds so cliché, but it takes your breath from you."
The Hazelwood School District said in a statement that it's aware of the report concerning the radioactive waste.
Safety is always our top priority, and we are actively discussing the implications of the findings," the district said.
"The Board of Education will be consulting with attorneys and experts in the area of testing to determine next steps."
