Ok, so for those that have not seen Barbie yet, we have a slight spoiler alert we need to issue here:
At one point during the movie, Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, gives an emotional rendition of "Push," Matchbox Twenty's massive 1997 hit.
Though the lyrics were written about Thomas' experiences with emotional abuse from his ex, Ken's interpretation in the movie is that Matchbox Twenty is the ultimate "bro band."
To be mocked like that, you think Rob Thomas would feel a little offended. Turns out, it's quite the opposite.
Thomas told USA TODAY he thought the use of "Push" in Barbie was "hilarious," and even dedicated a recent performance of the song to Gosling!
Barbie director Greta Gerwig told USA TODAY that growing up, she loved "Push."
She said, "Growing up, I loved that song. I was like, 'This is my rock 'n' roll, Dad. Enjoy The Who, but these are my guys.' And it wasn't until college that I actually thought, 'What is that song about?'
"Just thinking about 13-year-old me singing along and really meaning it, I was like, 'That is so interesting.' I looked it up and, in a way, (Thomas) was playing a character. It's almost like a story song."
