In the past, we've seen individuals going through a mid-life crisis usually purchase themselves a nice sports car or even maybe die their hair to drastically alter their appearance.
A new study has found that if you're going through a mid-life crisis, you should avoid picking yourself up a new car, and instead grab a skateboard.
Sociological researcher Dr. Paul O'Connor of the University of Exeter found that among aging Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s struggling with depression, skateboarding can actually bring on a "spiritual meaning" by providing self-expression."
He told the NY Post, "Skateboarding provides a serious emotional outlet for people who have experienced personal trials in the collapse of long-term relationships, career challenges, parenthood and substance abuse."
Of course with age comes an increased risk of injury. Each year, there are around 50,000 emergency room visits and 1,500 hospitalizations in the U.S. from skateboarding-related injuries alone, and about one-third of those are from first-time skaters.
