Normally when the city of Southlake and Carroll ISD have made national headlines, it's for the success of their exemplary varsity football program.
That is not the case right now, however. A debate rages on within the district on how the issues of race, identity, and student discipline are to be handled and taught in the classroom.
The fight over critical race theory being taught in the classroom, compounded by a video that went viral a few years ago of several Carroll ISD students shouting racist chants is the focus of a brand new podcast from NBC News called Southlake.
The six-episode podcast is described documents the district's first efforts to address racism after the 2018 video went viral, then shifting focus to the the rise of a local campaign to kill the diversity plan and the continuing battle of control over the school board.
New Carroll ISD superintendent Lane Ledbetter, who is a major focus of the podcast as he just started his role last December, says he believes that if anybody can come out of this, it's the people of Southlake.
He said, "I do believe if any community can come through this, then certainly it's the city of Southlake and Carroll ISD. They can come through this."
