It's been a big couple of weeks for the University of North Texas!
Not only did UNT officially join the American Athletic Conference for all its varsity sports, recent grad Ellie Breaux was just crowned Miss Texas 2023!
Breaux, who is originally from Houston, graduate from North Texas with a bachelor's degree in marketing with a focus on fashion design. Her first post on the official Miss America Texas Instagram account read, "I still can't believe this is real life. I am constantly having to look at myself in the mirror to be sure I'm not dreaming."
A member for UNT's dance team, Breaux performed a dance and rhythmic gymnasts routine to Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand," the theme to the film Top Gun: Maverick.
The UNT Dance Team would later tweet a note of congratulations for Breaux, writing "We're so proud of your perseverance and determination to never give up on your dreams!"
Per NBC DFW, for her victory Breaux won a $20,000 college scholarship and moves on to the Miss America 2024 pageant.
After the pageant, Breaux took the time to talk about her platform, Cops in the Community.
She said, "I am hoping to unify Texas. My dad's a police officer, my uncle's a police officer, my cousin's a police officer -- I come from a family of law enforcement, and there's such a miscommunication between police officers and their communities and I'm really trying to bridge that gap so we can unify Texas and ultimately unify America."
