In a last-minute reversal of thought, World Cup officials have banned the sale of alcohol in stadiums in Qatar according to ESPN.
FIFA and Qatari organizers were apparently engaged in late negotiations over whether beer would be sold at the stadiums during the tournament, which begins on Sunday.
FIFA said in a statement: "Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing the sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters."
FIFA previously struck a deal with Budweiser to be the exclusive alcohol provider in the stadiums for matches. The company responded to this news in a since-deleted tweet that read: "Well, this is awkward."
Budweiser's parent company, AB InBev, pays tens of millions of dollars at each World Cup for exclusive rights to sell beer.
FIFA did make sure to note that the sale of Bud Zero, Budweiser's non-alcoholic option, wll still be available inside stadiums.
