12/08/2020Dear Johnny,This is hard to write, but this year has been hard for me andmy family. June 9th, my wife, who I’ve been with for 20years, suffered a stroke. She is 57. In lateAugust, she became paralyzed due to damage suffered fromthe stroke. She is doing physical therapy to try to regain useof one of her legs. She has been in and out of the hospital alot over the last three months and is due to come homeagain in the next week or two. I was in a car accident in 2005and I’ve got multiple discs that are damaged, so I am verylimited on what I can lift. The problem is when she comeshome I have no way to transfer her from the bed to herwheelchair, or from her wheelchair to the car, etc. Since shebecame paralyzed the only things she sees in our house arethe inside of our small bedroom, the inside of an ambulanceor a hospital room. Anytime we need to get her to thehospital or out of bed, we would have to call paramedics toget her moved. What I really need is a Hoyer lift. It is like ahuman version of an engine hoist. I found a refurbished onefor $750 with 2 batteries. If I had it, I could get her out of bed,let her move room to room, or even take her outside. With some help from friends and family, we have added aramp onto the front of the house and a small deck so shecould sit outside and at least have a change of scenery. Oneof her favorite things this time of year is to drive around andsee the Christmas lights. I feel horrible having to ask, but Idon’t know what to do and I’m at the end of my rope. Thanksfor your time and thank you for the help you give to thepeople of Kansas City.- Robert
