The best cheeseburger in Greenville County really isn’t fancy at all.

There are definitely some great options out there for thick, juicy burgers topped with French cheeses and truffles or other ritzy ingredients.

But if you’re looking for the hands-down, can’t-beat-it, best cheeseburger around, you have to go to Husk.

Those who’ve dined at the Husk location on Main St in the West End of downtown Greenville should be familiar with the restaurant’s more upscale dishes that tackle traditional Southern recipes.

The Husk burger, however, is something different.

James Beard Award winning chef Sean Brock created the burger as an ode to the diner-style drive-in burgers he had as a kid.

It’s made up of two thin patties, both topped with a slice of American cheese, stacked up on a squishy bun, on which a lather of special sauce and ketchup is drenched. Then add grilled onions and some pickles.

And that’s how every burger comes.

So don’t ask for a lettuce bun, don’t ask for tomatoes or a fried egg on top or anything extra, and don’t even ask for the bun on the side.

They serve it the same way each time, which is just fine, because though the recipe sounds basic enough, the way it all comes together is perfection.

The burger and a side of wedge fries costs $14 and can be ordered at lunchtime from 11:30 to 2 pm daily.

Just be sure to schedule a nap in afterwards.
