Drag Queen Controversy

You may recall the backlash that ensued following the news of a Drag Queen Story Hour – in which four drag queens read stories to children – that is scheduled inside the Five Forks Branch of the Greenville Public Library.

The event was scheduled by a local group called Mom’s Liberal Happy Hour South Carolina, although drag queen story hours themselves are popular, and equally controversial, nationwide.

Greenville City Council Chairman Butch Kirvin responded to a petition to cancel the event, which has now racked up more than 5500 signatures, saying that if the council had the authority, the event would be immediately cancelled.

For now, the creator of that petition is planning a counter event to be held at the same time – 3pm on February 16 – outside the library.

A petition supporting the drag queen story hour has about two thousand signatures.

The sheriff’s office is prepared to respond accordingly if there are safety or security concerns for either of the competing groups.
