Age Group Case Numbers Change Inversely

Eastside Branch of Prisma Health

As COVID-19 positive case numbers are on the rise in South Carolina, Greenville County particularly has been recognized as a hot spot for the novel coronavirus.

Prisma Health gave a virtual press conference today about changes they have seen recently in COVID-19 cases.

Dr. Scott Sasser, incident commander for Prisma Health’s COVID-19, said there has been an upward trend in younger age groups testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

However, there is a downward trend in positive cases in the 60 and up age group at Prisma's community health events.

"We're seeing a trend downward in the number of positive hospitalized patients that are over the age of 60.  We've dropped from 68.2% of our hospitalized patients in that age group down to 62.1% across the system," Dr. Sasser said.  "Conversely, we're seeing a trend up in the number of COVID positive hospitalized patients that are between the ages of 20 and 39, and that percentile has gone from 4.1% to 11.2% which is a double in percentage."

Prisma continues to host community testing events and reports their bed capacity is capable of handling the current number of cases.
