A North Georgia man is charged with felony DUI from that three-vehicle crash that backed up I-85 traffic for miles last (Tuesday) night and claimed the life of a man who was standing on the shoulder of the interstate.

Troopers say 51 year old Richard Caldwell was a passenger in a stalled pickup pulled onto the side of the southbound lane near the Laurens Road exit.

He was killed when a new 2020 Jeep veered onto the shoulder, struck him, the pickup he was working on, and an SUV also parked nearby.

The Jeep's driver, charged with felony DUI, is identified as 34 year old Irakli Samkharadze, of Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Samkharadze was denied bond.

The accident happened shortly after 5:30.

The southbound lanes were finally cleared about 11:00 p.m.
