While Greenville County Schools has always been proud of its dedicated Food and Nutrition Services workers (FANS), we are exceptionally proud of their tireless efforts during the COVID-19 crisis. Case in point? Today, FANS employees reached the unbelievable milestone of more than a million meals served to children since the statewide shutdown of schools on March 16. That’s 1,001,989 meas to be exact!
“This one-million meal mark is extraordinary, especially when you consider that this whole thing hit us unexpectedly. We did 1,200 meals the first day and 10,000 meals by the end of the week. Now we’re doing 25,000 meals per day,” said FANS director Joe Urban.
And it’s not just food workers. Bus drivers played a huge role in delivering meals to communities where students live. Additionally, school nurses selflessly volunteered to show up at meal preparation sites to take temperatures and gauge the health of everyone involved.
“At the time when people were asked to retreat to the safety of their homes, these employees came out to meet the needs of their community,” Urban said.
