Three people have tested positive for the mumps virus at the College of Charleston.

The school made the announcement on Monday as health officials attempt to confine the spread of the illness.

Due to three concurrent cases having been now confirmed, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control have officially classified this as an outbreak.

The cases date back to September 17th. School officials and health officials have since been working to notify all students, staff, and peers of the infected students, urging them to monitor their own health closely and take all precautions.

Symptoms of a mumps infection include swelling of the cheeks and jaw area below the ear, along with fever, headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and painful muscle aches throughout the body.
