The full press release from Greenville County is listed below.
On Tuesday, 23 June, at approximately 0900 AM, a new bridge will be installed at Lake Conestee Nature Preserve.
The SC Army National Guard, 2nd Battalion, 151st Aviation Regiment, based at the SCARNG Aviation Support Center at Donaldson Field, SC-TAC, in collaboration with the Foundation’s contractor Banner Industrial Construction, will execute the installation.
SCARNG will use a CH-47F Chinook heavy lift helicopter to move the bridge from the staging site at Belmont Fire District to the installation site.
SCARNG assistance is being provided on behalf of the Conestee Foundation, with Greenville County as the local government sponsor.
The structure is a prefabricated steel bridge 84 ft x 4 ft, designed and built by Contech, and weighing 18,500 lbs.
The bridge will replace a previous bridge over Marrow Bone Creek destroyed by flooding in November 2018.
This heavy lift mission importantly serves as a training exercise for the aviation unit, providing an exceptional training opportunity to install a structure of this sort simulating a military objective, while providing valuable assistance to non-military community partners.
Funding for the construction and installation of the bridge was raised entirely by the Conestee Foundation with no direct tax money.
Major funding for the project was provided through grants from ReWa, the Priester Foundation, the Rose Ball, and contributions from hundreds of private individual supporters of Lake Constee Nature Preserve.
LCNP comprises over 400 acres of old Lake Conestee, and three adjacent former farm properties, including extensive wetlands, forests, and over 3 miles of the Reedy River corridor. LCNP has over 14 miles of trails managed by the Preserve.
LCNP is a Wildlife Sanctuary.
Historic Lake Conestee is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
