
On August 20, 2020, officers from the Spartanburg Police Department where dispatched to at fight call inside of Walmart located at 141 Dorman Center Drive.
While responding officers were given information that the disturbance involved an off-duty police officer working security for the business.
When officers arrived on scene, witness stated a male subject started attacking the officer for no apparent reason.
On August 20, 2020, around 1:30 p.m. officers from the Spartanburg Police Department were dispatched to a disturbance/fight call inside of Walmart located at 141 Dorman Center Drive.
While responding to the scene the call was upgraded to an officer down call. Spartanburg County E911 relayed information an officer was being attacked by a suspect in the store.
When officers arrived on scene, witnesses stated a man attacked the officer for no apparent reason.
The man was brandishing a knife during the attack.
The officer was knocked to the ground and punched several times.
Citizens and employees were able to help the officer by pulling the man away.
The officer was transported to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
The condition of the officer is not known at this time.
The man left running on foot across the Walmart parking lot.
He was wearing a dark t-shirt with orange writing and dark pants.
The male got into a black vehicle which was parked at the bottom of the parking lot.
When he was attempting to flee from the scene he crashed into a vehicle.
The suspect was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.
The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
The vehicle collision was investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The suspect has been identified as James Ray Cunningham, 12/28/1997 of 225 West Camelton Drive, Woodruff, South Carolina.
Charges are pending.
