There is an urgent need for O-Negative blood.  That word today from The Blood Connection (TBC).

O-Negative is the "universal" blood type which means anyone in the hospital can receive this blood, whether they have an O, A, B or AB blood type.

The Blood Connection says that, with just one donation, O-Negative donors can save up to three lives and that the need for O-Negative blood never stops.  Their figures show that one in seven people who visit a hospital need blood and, unfortunately, less than ten percent of eligible donors actually give. TBC says, national statistics show that every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

TBC is asking O-Negative donors to step up and help their neighbors in the Upstate community. Although TBC is specifically requesting O-Negative blood donations, all blood types are needed.

To donate blood, you need to be healthy, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be at least 17 years old (or 16 with written parental consent.)

Blood can be donated at blood drives around the Upstate or by going to a TBC donation center listed below.

  • Greenville at 435 Woodruff Road
  • Greenwood at 341 Old Abbeville Highway
  • Easley at 5116 Calhoun Memorial Highway,
  • Seneca at 1308 Sandifer Boulevard
  • Spartanburg at 270 North Grove Medical Park Drive, Spartanburg, SC.

Businesses and organizations are encouraged to host a blood drive.  For information about hosting a drive, call 864-751-3019.
