The COVID delta variant has been growing in presence in various states and countries in recent weeks and has now found its way to the Upstate of South Carolina, with 4 cases of the strain reported in DHEC’s latest data from Friday.
The Midlands also reported 20 cases of the delta variant, followed by Pee Dee with 18 and the Lowcountry with 12. However, DHEC did not provide details on what specific counties the delta variant cases were reported from.
In a virtual press conference Wednesday, Prisma’s Dr. Helmut Albrecht, an Infectious Disease Physician, said that he wouldn’t be surprised to see the delta variant become the most prominent COVID strain before schools start back next month.
This is due to how quickly it can spread through communities, especially those with low vaccination rates or with less easily available access to quality medical care, he said.
