Two separate Upstate weekend crashes killed 6 people and injured another. The 1st crash happened Saturday night on I-26 in Spartanburg and shut down the highway for a period of time, after 5 people were killed in a crash.
Highway Patrol said the collision happened around 9:30pm near mm 12. Troopers said a commercial vehicle hauler struck a Toyota from behind on the westbound side of I-26 then crashed through the cable barriers and crossed into the eastbound lanes.
A Honda sedan traveling east collided with hauler, killing all 5 people inside. The driver of the hauler was taken to the hospital for injuries. The driver of the Toyota was not injured. As of the time of this report, the Coroner has not released the names of those who died in the crash.
The second crash happened around 6:30 Sunday night in Greenville County. The Highway Patrol reports one person died and another was airlifted to the hospital. Troopers say a vehicle on August Street crossed the center line near Scott lane and struck another vehicle, whose driver died at the scene.
The Coroner's Office identified the victim as 55-year-old John Michael Phillips of Honea Path. The driver causing the collision was flown to a hospital. No other details have been released.
