Are colleges and universities too "woke" these days?

The University of Southern California has removed the term "field" from its curriculum due to it having what they described as "racist connotations related to slavery". The school has renamed the office of Field Education and changed it to the Office of Practicum Education to be more sensitive. To me these type of changes are sort of overcorrecting and creating an issue when there is one. As a man who was married to a black woman and has multi-cultural kids, never once has any of them heard the term field and associated it with slavery when it's not used in that context.
