A large fire in the Upstate that sent a firefighter to the hospital has prompted an arson investigation. The South Spartanburg Fire Department was dispatched Tuesday to an area on Stewart Road near Highway 56.
The blaze was 1st reported as a brush fire, but when crews arrived, they realized that a former potpourri factory was engulfed in flames. Fire crews from Fountain Inn, Mauldin, Simpsonville and various other departments responded, and the fire was eventually contained.
The building had reportedly been abandoned for at least 15 years, and the fire left the structure partially collapsed. One firefighter was hospitalized with heat related complications and was treated and released at a local hospital.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says that an arson unit is investigating the incident.
