The South Carolina Supreme Court says, the constitutional rights of a Pickens County woman jailed for the drug overdose death of her grandchild were violated.

Angela Brewer was convicted of homicide by child abuse in the 2017 death of fourteen-month-old Kolbin Lusk. She was accused of giving the baby a sippy cup containing a lethal dose of oxycodone. She was caring for the child, her grandson, while his mother was at work. A jury sentenced Brewer to twenty years in prison. She's been held at Graham Correctional in Columbia ever since.
The justices said her defense team should have been allowed to cross-examine crime lab technicians about their testing procedure. Their ruling reverses the conviction and the sentence. So far, prosecutors have not responded to the high court's decision.
