Flags at the State Capitol in Columbia are being lowered to honor the life of a renowned civil rights activist from the Upstate. Governor McMaster will direct that flags be lowered after the passing of Jesse Jackson.

The Greenville native died early Tuesday morning after a battle with illness. Jackson was a protege of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and became a prominent leader in the Civil Rights Movement.


Jackson was a part of the Alabama Civil Rights Marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. Jackson graduated from Sterling High School in Greenville during segregation. He went on to play football at the University of Illinois and later N.C. A&T.

Jackson ran for President in 1988 and finished 2nd in the running for the Democratic Nomination. Jesse Jackson was 84 years old.
