Controversy has emerged surrounding the content of some of the children’s books available in Greenville County public libraries.

The Greenville GOP has taken issue with some of the books available in the children’s sections of Greenville County public libraries, specifically those Greenville GOP Chairman Jeff Davis referred to as “sexually explicit”.

A majority of these books include LGBTQ+ material, and Chairman Davis explained that his wife and others have checked out several of these books from libraries in an attempt to keep them away from children while he pushes for them to be restricted.

“We don’t want to ban the books. We don’t want to burn the books. But we do want to have an extra check and balance on where they’re accessed from,” Chairman Davis said. “These books may be important to certain people, certain families, certain situations. They may be very helpful as an educational tool for certain kids going through different types of issues, but it just shouldn’t be sitting open in a children’s section for a five-year-old to have access to.”

I also reached out to Upstate Pride SC for comment on the library book controversy but did not receive a response.
