A convicted killer from the Upstate is one over a dozen people, many of them of inmates who are charged in a multi-million dollar fraud scheme. The U.S. Dept. Of Justice says 9 South Carolina housed inmates and six other people are charged with defrauding the federal government out of covid related unemployment benefits.
The indictment covers a total of more than 50 counts. Included in the group is Jason Andrew Cash who is serving life for the 2015 killing of Carey Mauldin at a Spartanburg home. South Carolina inmate Reginald White Jr. is also one of the top targets of the case, he is charged with 20 counts of wire fraud from the scheme.
Seven other state prison system inmates are charged with at least one count of fraud.
Two of the non-inmates charged include two South Carolina women, Bridgette Cash of Landrum and Benika Kershaw of Chester. Jessica Howell of Southport , North Carolina about 30 miles from Wilmington is also charged in the indictment.
