A six-member commission will be appointed to decide how to allocate the money from a one-cent sales tax to fix Greenville County's roads, if voters approve it in November.

Council voted seven-to-four Tuesday to create an independent commission to recommend specific improvements in hopes of improving the chances will agree to the tax as a referendum on the November general election ballot.

Chairman Dan Tripp believes that will resolve the skepticism he blames for the defeat of a one-cent transportation tax a decade ago. County Council will appoint three members of the commission; Greenville City Council will appoint the fourth who will, in turn, appoint the fifth and six from other municipalities in the county.

The four who voted against that plan include Councilman Stan Tzouvelekas who said the commission should've been appointed before council voted to put the tax on the ballot. Benton Blount and Steve Shaw argued there should be a better way to pick the projects. The list is supposed to be finished by the end of next month.

t's estimated the penny tax will raise 131 million dollars a year.
