Disappearance of soldier at Fort Jackson takes tragic turn

A soldier at Fort Jackson is dead, after officials said he had gone missing Monday and was then reported as found Tuesday. At a news conference Wednesday morning, U.S. Army Officials announced that Staff Sergeant Jamie Contreras was found unresponsive around 11:15 Monday night.

Contreras had gone out as part of a land navigation exercise Monday morning and was reported missing around 1:30 that afternoon, after not returning. Those exercises generally last around 3 hours and search for him began around 2 PM Monday.


A spokeswoman for Ft. Jackson said the area of the exercise was on the perimeter of the vast property that makes up the post. Contreras was a candidate for drill sergeant and was participating with the drill sergeant academy at Fort Jackson.

No further details on his death have been released by Army officials, as of the time of this report. An investigation into his death is ongoing. Staff Sergeant Jamie Conteras was 40 years old
