On Monday, Gov. McMaster signed a new law on policing standards. The law requires law enforcement agencies statewide to follow minimum standards, on the usage of tactics like chokeholds to subdue suspects. The new standard would impose fines starting at $1,000 per day to comply and even shut those agencies down, if the issues persists. The new state law also states that officers who don't intervene when a colleague uses excessive force, would be guilty of misconduct. The law or at least the timing of it being signed in, seems to be in response to the death of George Floyd, as the two year anniversary of that incident in this week. I see a couple of concerns with the new law, one would be shutting down agencies after fines for not complying to using minimum standards on certain tactics. Shutting down the agencies would take away needed officers from the area they patrol. It would also seemingly keep officers from the same agency who are not guilty of any wrong doing from being able to work and draw their paycheck. My 2nd concern on this is that it seems to be "virtue signaling", the legislation passed the house last year but is just now being signed. I do not think it's a coincidence that the bill was signed the same week as the 2 year anniversary of Floyd's death. Do you agree with the new law? Let us know, below.
