A facility in Western North Carolina is helping to track the Artemis II mission as it makes its way to the moon. The Pisgah Astronomical Institute was built in the Balsam Grove area of Transylvania County in 1961.
NASA built the facility and equipped it with two 85 foot telescopes. In the early 80's the Department of Defense took over supervision of the facility.
The Institute was one of 34 groups selected to help track the mission. That means that same telescopes used to track early NASA mission will be used to gather data in the current mission.
